The best cheesesteak in Philadelphia isn’t sold by a sandwich shop. It’s found in a pizzeria. On the corner of 9th and Fitzwater lies Angelo’s, a Philly institution. With crowds and lines reaching into the hundreds on weekends, there’s one thing for certain – Angelo’s knows what they’re doing. Their signature cheesesteak is comprised of whole muscle ribeye, laden with melted Cooper Sharp cheese, packed with fried onions, and all enveloped by a freshly-baked, sesame seed-studded roll. For many, this is the best cheesesteak in Philly. But don’t sleep on the pizza – many say it rivals any top pizzeria in New York. Round pies, square pies, thin pies, thick pies, upside down pies – the list goes on. And I am honored to have been able to capture a piece of Angelo’s story with none other than their owner, Danny.

As a high school teacher, 600 or 700 triggers me so much now.
I lived 1 block from this place when they opened. Now I live like 8 blocks away. It's so awesome to see the success. They had a hell of a time opening. Fires, inspections, all kinds of shit kept delaying it. I remember when someone left a note on their door saying they'd never make it. I think Danny still has it framed over the registers. Shit's worth the line too

The key to a great cheesesteak is the bread. Anyone can cook the meat, etc. I like a LOT of meat on the bread, so the bread need to add flavor and be able to handle a lot of meat and the grease that goes with it. This is why Angelo's is the best.

DiNics is delicious, nice to feature them because they deserve it, a deluxe Italian roast pork is my goto.
But yeah Angelo’s is fantastic. I’ve tried a lot of cheesesteaks around Philly and theirs is legitimately one of the best. Can’t say that for every place Michelin featured but they’re worth it. I was spoiled because for a while I only lived a few blocks away and it was easy to call in an order in between the lunch and dinner rush.

I was just there when I had a long layover in Philly back in mid-December 2025!! Weather was bad but my brother and I heard they made the best cheesesteaks in town so we had to make the trip across town!! Eating that philly cheesesteak healed something in my soul. One of THE BEST sandwiches I've ever eaten in my life.
