LOCK HAVEN — Lock Haven’s dining scene has a fresh new addition with the opening of Jumangi Bistro, a family owned restaurant offering a unique blend of Mediterranean and Latin cuisine, focusing on connecting the community through food.
The owners of Jumangi Bistro created this restaurant with a simple idea in mind — food can bring people together.
In small cities like Lock Haven, the owners noticed a lack of diversity outside of foods like American classics such as pizza, wings and hoagies.
“I wanted to bring an authenticness to the area and diversity through our food,” the owner, who asked her name not to be included, said.
At Jumangi, guests are encouraged to slow down, break bread and enjoy the experience of a meal together — whether that’s with family, friends or neighbors.
“Breaking bread means to sit at the same table no matter what your strife is with each other, ignore it and just sit down and eat,” the owner said.
The menu reflects the spirit of connection, offering a mix of Mediterranean and Latin dishes that highlight the comforting classics Jumangi’s owner grew up with, spanning from Italian and Greek to Puerto Rican and Cuban, with everything in between.
“We’re trying to teach culture and knowledge of diversity through food,” said the owner. “I’m hoping my food will spark a conversation to learn and to understand the people that come together to create the food.”
More than just a place to eat, the restaurant hopes to become a welcoming gathering space in Lock Haven, a place where conversations flow as easily as the food is shared.
Locals and visitors alike are invited to stop in, try the food and take part in what the owners hope will become a shared tradition: coming together around the table.
“I’m hoping that, if nothing else, we’ve changed the lives of the people that have come in and sat at our tables for the better through our food and our conversation,” the owner said.
