Trump targets French exports with massive 200% tariffs after President Macron hesitates to join the “Board of Peace,” a rebuilding initiative now confirmed to include an invitation for Vladimir Putin
Donald Trump turned up the heat on a growing rift with France, threatening a massive 200 percent tariff on French wine and champagne on Monday. The reason? French President Emmanuel
Macron isn’t exactly eager to RSVP to Trump’s latest project: the “Board of Peace.”
While the board was initially pitched as a way to oversee the rebuilding of Gaza, its actual scope seems much broader. This ambiguity appears to be the sticking point for European allies. Trump, ever the negotiator, isn’t taking the hesitation lightly.

Speaking about Macron, Trump didn’t mince words: “I’ll put a 200 percent tariff on his wines and champagnes. And he’ll join. But he doesn’t have to join,” he told reporters in Florida.
France pushes back
The view from Paris is significantly more cautious. An official source close to Macron told AFP on Monday that France “does not intend to answer favourably” to the invitation.
The French government’s hesitation stems from the fine print—or lack thereof—in the board’s founding documents. The same source noted that the charter “goes beyond the sole framework of Gaza.” This suggests that Paris is worried about being locked into a global committee with powers and potentially controversial members.

A seat for Putin
Adding another layer of complexity to the drama, Trump confirmed that he is looking to include Moscow in the group. After the
Kremlin broke the news earlier on Monday, Trump verified the outreach. When asked by a reporter in Florida if he had asked Vladimir Putin to participate, Trump responded, “Yes, he’s been invited.”
Why it matters
This isn’t just about the price of a bottle of Bordeaux. It signals a return to high-stakes trade pressure as a primary tool for US foreign policy. By linking wine imports to a geopolitical task force, Trump is signalling that “Peace” will be negotiated on his terms—or at a very high cost to his allies’ exports.
