The U.S. won gold before any Olympic medals were even handed out. And Italy might take this loss personally.

As a small number of events were getting underway in the lead-up to the Opening Ceremony for the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics, a new champion was crowned in a contest that means a great deal really to only those in a few places throughout the world: Italy, and a few select areas of the United States.

The contest in question: The best pizza in the world.

Gina Kirschenheiter from “The Real Housewives of Orange County” joined Team USA stars and a group of Italian nonnas to learn how to make pasta. Hilarity ensued.

According to that list by Time Out, the top pie is not found in the Olympic host country. Instead, it is found in New York City. (Because where else, right? Lookin’ at you, Connecticut).

The best pizza in the world is the Cacio e Pepe slice from Mama’s Too in Manhattan, according to Time Out. Likely much to the chagrin of Italy, it beat out famed pizza destinations like 180grammi Pizzeria Romana, in Rome, which was found to have the second-best slice.

Pizzeria da Attilio, in Naples, was ranked fourth on the list.

What could unite New Yorkers and Italians in bewilderment is the fact that no other places in either location made the list.
