🇬🇷 Greek Pastitsio (Classic Greek Pasta Bake)

🧾 Ingredients

Pasta Layer

1 lb pasta (penne, ziti, or bucatini)

2 tbsp butter

1 egg

½ cup grated Parmesan or kefalotyri cheese

Meat Sauce

1 lb ground beef or lamb

1 small onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 can (15 oz) crushed tomatoes

2 tbsp tomato paste

1 tsp cinnamon

½ tsp nutmeg

1 tsp dried oregano

Salt & black pepper to taste

2 tbsp olive oil

Béchamel Sauce

4 tbsp butter

¼ cup all-purpose flour

3 cups warm milk

2 eggs, beaten

1 cup grated Parmesan or kefalotyri

Salt, pepper & pinch of nutmeg

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1. Cook pasta until al dente. Drain, toss with butter, egg, and cheese. Set aside.

2. Make meat sauce: Heat olive oil, sauté onion until soft. Add garlic and ground meat; cook until browned. Stir in tomatoes, tomato paste, cinnamon, nutmeg, oregano, salt, and pepper. Simmer 15 minutes.

3. Prepare béchamel: Melt butter, whisk in flour, cook 1 minute. Slowly whisk in warm milk until thick. Remove from heat, stir in eggs, cheese, salt, pepper, and nutmeg.

4. Assemble:

Layer pasta in greased baking dish

Add meat sauce evenly

Pour béchamel on top and smooth

5. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 40–45 minutes until golden and set.

6. Rest 15 minutes before slicing for clean layers.

Let it cool slightly for perfect slices

Lamb gives a more authentic flavor
