As you can see, the ‘sandworm’ cake I made had to be covered in ‘sand’. Most options I tried looked like sand but sadly had the consistency of sand – mmmm gritty.
I was about to give up, when I finally found a trick that worked. I kept a bit of the sponge cake. Then used a sieve like a grater by rubbing the cake through. The cake coming through actually had a great sand effect. That way, I managed to keep the flavour and the texture!

That looks really good. I’ve used crumbled graham cracker or wafers. I’ve also used brown sugar. This looks light and fluffy
I love him

This looks so cool! What did you make the sandworm from?
One time to make beach sand for a cake, I put golden oreos through a food processor. It worked perfectly, and I used leftovers as an ice cream topping 😋😋
You know what else works great, if you use graham crackers, or blended cookie crumbs etc. for sand, take dark sprinkles or jimmies, blitz them in the blender with your “sand”.. instead of leaving perfect round sprinkles that look *kinda* real.. it cracks and smashes the sprinkles up, leaving a dark sprinkle broken in half, in small shards.. and the insides of them are white and grey.. so it takes them from perfect and REALLY makes it look like gravel and dirty Little Rock pieces, since your eve can’t tell they used to be sprinkles/jimmies.
This is an older pic of mine and I should have crushed them a bit more (you can see which ones are clearly nonpareils, but you can kinda tell what I mean.)

Crushed graham crackers?
