A Michelin-star restaurant which began ‘serving small plates before the hype’ will be closing its doors after 27 years. Club Gascon, located next to Smithfield Market, will serve its last dinner on March 28.

The French restaurant was awarded a Michelin-star in 2022, for its menu which combines traditional Gascon flavours with modern influences. Dishes at Club Gascon are cooked-up by head chef Pascal Aussignac, with his business partner Vincent Labeyrie helping run the venue.

A spokesperson for the restaurant announced the closure with a “heavy heart” via Instagram on Thursday. The noticed said: “Since 1998, it has been our privilege to celebrate the cuisine and spirit of Gascony in London; welcoming guests from around the world and sharing a dining experience rooted in tradition, seasonality, and creativity.

“We are deeply thankful to our loyal guests, and to our incredible team past and present, whose passion and dedication brought Club Gascon to life every day.

“We’re also incredibly grateful for the loyalty, support and enthusiasm shown by our community, and for the recognition we have received, including nearly 25 years of Michelin stars and other accolades.”

An email sent to regular customers added further details on the restaurants culinary history as pioneers of the ‘small plates’, which have boomed in popularity in recent years.

According to Hot Dinners, it said: “From the very beginning, our approach to dining was driven by passion and creativity – offering guests the freedom to explore three to five dishes across our menu, in no set order, long before ‘small plates’ became part of everyday dining language.

“It was a sharing-led experience designed to showcase the very best of Gascony’s rich culinary heritage.”
