Founded in 1997 by Yiannis Boutaris – after he left Boutari wine – Kir-Yianni is well-known for realising the potential of the indigenous red Xinomavro in the Naoussa and Amyndeon regions.

Today the estate is run by Boutaris’ son, fifth-generation winemaker Stellios Boutaris, who has brought with him a strong focus on sustainability, site-specific winemaking and ongoing research and development.

Kir-Yianni farm 48ha of hillside vineyards in Naoussa (10ha of which is certified organic) and 54ha in Amyndeon – the coolest vine growing region in Greece, both key appellations for Xinomavro.

From these estates, the producer aims to showcase the versatility of the indigenous grape, from rosé and traditional-method sparkling brut from Amyndeon through to reds from Naoussa.

Domaine Sigalas was founded in 1991 by Paris Sigalas and was supported by Kir-Yianni from 2009 until last year, when it came under ownership of the latter (backed by a significant investment in the vineyards and workers).

The estate manages 40ha of estate and leased vineyards in the volcanic soil of the north of Santorini.

Oenologist Sara Iakovidou, vineyard manager Stratos Xyrafis and Yiannis Boutaris – Stellios Boutaris’ son – work together to offer their own take on Assyrtiko, with the variety dominating plantings.

Domaine Sigalas also works to preserve Santorini’s environmental and economic viability, employing sustainability initiatives which aim to protect the island’s vineyards and winemaking culture.

Commenting on the partnership, Tom Platt, CEO of Liberty Wines, said: “We are hugely excited to be working with Kir-Yianni and Domaine Sigalas – two dynamic estates whose environmental credentials and focus on sustainability match our own as a Carbon Neutral Plus company.

“They sit perfectly alongside our existing Greek producer Kanakaris, together with Matošević and Enosophia of Croatia, Dalia of Serbia and Gašper of Slovenia, in offering highly distinctive wines from native varieties that have an authentic sense of place and will bring real excitement to our customers’ wine lists.”

Wines from Kir-Yianni are now available through Liberty Wines, while Domaine Sigalas wines will be available from March.

Wines from both producers will be available to taste at this month’s Liberty Wines Portfolio Tastings.
