A new Mediterranean spot has landed in Atascadero, but its dishes might be familiar.

Mediterranean Spice at 7341 El Camino Real in Atascadero opened up three months ago, taking over the former Yogurt Creations spot and combining menus with Moe’s Pizza to create a fusion restaurant serving Mediterranean dishes and custom-built pizzas.

Owner Mohamed Rezk opened Moe’s Pizza in the Adobe Plaza at 7339 El Camino Real five years ago, serving up classic pizzas like pepperoni and margherita as well as fusions like a gyro pizza and chicken shawarma pizza.

Rezk also opened Mediterranean Spice in Paso Robles at 1401 Park St. two years ago, serving the same menu with additions of pasta choices and wings.

While the pizza joint’s popularity in Atascadero and its second location in Paso Robles, Rezk saw an opportunity — a way to mesh the two restaurants to a larger space to build an enormous menu of the pizzas and authentic Mediterranean kebabs, shawarma and falafels.

According to its website, the restaurant “features delicious pizzas, blending classic Mediterranean ingredients with a unique twist that reflects family recipes.”

On a recent weekday, Mediterranean Spice was packed full during the lunch rush, with one of its cooks handing out fresh baklava and visiting every table, asking for comments and critiques on the food, all answered with enthusiastic thumbs-ups.

The restaurant’s menu includes 19 gourmet pizzas, nine salad options, appetizers like baba ghanoush and falafel bites, specialty kebabs with lamb or kofta, sandwiches and even desserts.

The price range varies from $1.50 churros to a popular $23.99 mixed grill platter served with rice, pita, hummus, grilled vegetables and a salad.

Gyro and shawarma sandwiches cost $11 to $12, bowls are priced at $14 and the platters start at $16.

The pizzas come in a wide range of sizes, all the way up to a “Monster 28-inch” version that costs $93.90.
