Man, beautiful rice, perfectly grilled fish, and nice not overdosing in sodium miso soup. The menu is also decorated nicely with so much nutritional value gradings so it makes it easy to see what you're actually putting into your belly.

I been to Japan 6 times, and only discovered Ootoya on this most recent trip.

I hate fancy dining and it's all a scam so I avoid super up ur own arse omakase stuff.

The only unfortunate thing is the lack of rice refills, but to be fair, the prices are still fair? I used to love Yayoi ken, but it seems their good quality ain't so good anymore? The photo to reality discrepancy almost matches McDonald's…

Does anyone else agree and if not what are your recommendations? Like what are your go to reliable comfort meals?

I went to Ootoya for the first time last time as well and loved it!!! But calling an omakase a scam is a disrespect to the art. It might not be for you but it’s not a scam. The creation of dishes with the highest quality ingredients it’s an art form and part of the Japanese culture of how they treat food.

I agree with the other user who said that it’s not a “scam”. Not saying that every expensive place is good or deserving but generally speaking, if you can afford high end Japanese cuisine, you’re not going to get that level of quality and type of food elsewhere. You’re also typically paying for the location, ambience, attention, service, source/quality of ingredients, etc but more importantly the experience and skill of the chef. In that regard, it not much different than paying for the knowledge, skill and experience of a top lawyer or doctor.

Having said that, if all you’re looking for is to fill your stomach with run of the mill, predictable but solid Japanese teishoku, Ootoya has a good menu selection and balance of dishes and is over all good quality for the price, speed and convenience.
