US President Trump threatens France again with tariffs of 200 percent on French wine and champagne. The reason is President Macron’s cancellation of the US invitation to the planned “Gaza Peace Council.” Trump has also invited Russian President Putin to this council. France’s President Emmanuel Macron had previously stated that he did not want to participate in this body. Trump said that Macron would become part of the council, “but does not have to participate” – and directly linked this to the threat of the wine tariff.

Already in March 2025, Trump had indicated similar tariffs on wine and champagne, at that time in response to EU tariffs on US whiskey. However, these did not come into effect.

The renewed tariff threat from Donald Trump against French wine and champagne fits into a well-known pattern. Tariffs on wine are seen as a preferred means of pressure by the US President against France, which he has regularly employed since his first term. Trump openly refers to previous successes, especially regarding the dispute over the French digital tax (GAFAM tax), where he threatened Emmanuel Macron with tariffs of up to 100 percent, and France subsequently yielded.

This time, Trump also reacted reflexively with the threat in response to Macron’s cancellation of the planned Peace Council. France’s Minister of Agriculture, Annie Genevard, described this as an “unacceptable” and “brutal” threat against an already struggling sector. The USA is the most important export market for French wines. Since 2025, producers have recorded a significant decline in exports to the USA.
