Fans of Gerard Butler would agree that his career is mostly focused on action-thrillers, which began contributing to his prominence decades ago. For his portrayal of King Leonidas in Zack Snyder’s 2006 action flick 300, the Scottish actor garnered increased attention, and not many years later, he became involved in the action thriller Has Fallen film series as a Secret Service agent, Mike Banning. Compared to his action portfolio, Butler hasn’t starred in that many science fiction films; however, he has headlined a few notable ones, such as Geostorm, Gamer, and the apocalyptic and recently trending Greenland.
Starring Butler as structural engineer John Garrity, Greenland follows him, his estranged wife Allison, and their young son Nathan, embarking on a perilous journey to find sanctuary as a planet-killing comet hurtles toward Earth. Amid terrifying accounts of cities getting leveled, the family experiences the best and worst in humanity, and as the countdown to the global apocalypse approaches zero, their incredible trek culminates in a desperate, last-minute flight to a possible haven. Ric Roman Waugh directed Greenland, which also stars Morena Baccarin, Roger Dale Floyd, Scott Glenn, David Denman, and Hope Davis.
This week has seen Greenland draw renewed attention despite its sequel, Greenland 2: Migration’s disastrous box office run. The sci-fi prequel has regained its popularity on HBO Max in Finland as well as on Amazon Prime Video in multiple European countries, including Norway and Denmark. It is also surging on PVOD charts in South America, particularly on the Apple TV store in Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, Guatemala, and Venezuela. Greenland was released in 2020 and grossed $52.3 million worldwide with a production budget of $35 million.

Six years after Greenland, its sequel, also starring Butler and Baccarin, was released to a mixed reception. Greenland 2: Migration premiered in January 2026 and has earned an underwhelming 49% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes compared to its prequel’s Certified Fresh 78%. On top of that, the sci-fi sequel made just $8.5 million in its opening weekend and grossed only $26 million against a $90 million budget. Roman Griffin Davis, Amber Rose Revah, Gordon Alexander, Peter Polycarpou, William Abadie, and Tommie Earl Jenkins also star in Greenland 2: Migration.
Greenland is available on the Apple TV store globally. Stay tuned to Collider for further streaming news.
