🥖 Challah Recipe (5-lb Dough)

Proof:
• 5½ cups warm water
• 4 tbsp active dry yeast
• ¼ cup sugar
Allow to proof until foamy.

Add:
• 2 eggs
• ½ cup oil
• ¾ cup sugar
• 5 lb bread flour or all-purpose flour

Knead until combined, then add the remaining ½ cup oil and knead until fully incorporated.

Divide the dough into 2 batches and knead each in a stand mixer until smooth. Combine both batches, form into a ball, place in a bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled.

Divide into 8 portions (these will be your 8 challahs). Form each into a ball and cover with plastic to prevent drying.
Each ball is divided into 4 strands. Flatten into discs, roll into logs (thicker in the center, tapered ends), lightly dust with flour, braid, and place on a lined baking tray. Cover and let rise until doubled.

Bake at 350°F for about 30 minutes, until deeply golden.

If you’ve ever hesitated to make challah, I hope this recipe and technique give you the confidence to try 🤍

  6. Hi, I wanted to let you know that I make your brownies very often and everyone loves them!
I use gluten free flour (King Arthur 's measure for measure, for those of us who have Celiac or have gluten sensitivity). Even those who are not gluten free love it. Sometimes I add walnuts. Thank you for sharing your recipes!!!!! Note: it takes a little longer when gluten free flour is used.

  7. Made it yesterday and my whole family (including me) couldn't believe how delicious it turned out. I cut the recipe in half. Two now in the freezer for later. Thank you so much for a spectacular recipe. Xx❤

  8. I don't have a bigger family like you so I was wondering if you could give me the measurements for making a smaller batch of challah say making half the size. I appreciate it so much Sonya. Shabbat shalom

  9. Sonya, you and your family are special and beautiful people, I love watching and listening to you, I’ve learnt so much. I’m a Unitarian in the Uk, I believe in the power of prayer and doing it in whatever way and wherever you feel comfortable- “we do not have to think alike to love alike”(John Wesley)❤️❤️❤May your prayers be answered, Frances 🥰

  10. What is the yeast that you are using? And I don't like mine that dark at the top, how can I make it to where it comes out lighter?

  11. Hi Sonya,
I'm not Jewish but a Christian.
To be honest, I always thought that Jewish people only ate bread without yeast.
Thank you for teaching me about your culture.
I'm curious what you do with the piece of dough you scooped out with the tin foil and prayed over it.
Do you discard it, keep it?
Just a honest question, because I want to learn more about your culture.
Sending blessings from the Netherlands.🙏🏻 ❤

  12. Malachi, the final prophet of the Old Testament, points to Jesus through prophecies of a messenger preparing the way and the Lord coming to His temple (Malachi 3:1). Key verses include Malachi 3:1 (the Messenger of the Covenant) and 4:5-6 (the coming of Elijah), interpreted as precursors to John the Baptist and Jesus.
    Key Malachi Verses about Jesus:
Malachi 3:1 (MSG & Lord): "Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts".
Interpretation: The messenger is interpreted as John the Baptist, while the "Lord" and "Messenger of the Covenant" is Jesus.
Malachi 3:2-3 (The Refiner): Describes the Lord as a "refiner's fire" and "fullers' soap," foreshadowing Jesus who purifies His people.
Malachi 4:5-6 (Elijah's Return): "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes." Jesus identifies John the Baptist as the fulfillment of this role (Matthew 11:14).
    Connection to Torah and Context:
Torah Adherence: Malachi 4:4 emphasizes remembering the "Torah of Moshe my servant". This reinforces that the coming Messiah (Jesus) is the fulfillment of the laws and prophecies established in the Torah and the prophets.
Refining the Priesthood: Malachi critiques the priests for violating Torah standards (e.g., offering blemished sacrifices in Malachi 1:7-8), setting the stage for the Messiah (Jesus) to come as a perfect, refining sacrifice.
Malachi connects to the broader biblical narrative by bridging the Torah with the New Covenant brought by Jesus, highlighting that the Lord himself is coming to purify his people and fulfill the covenant.
