Help fellas, I had a backburn and cleared the auger. Disassemble and cleaned it out. Fans work and pellets got hot. Then the next cook, got up to temp but started smoking out the hopper again. When I checked the fire pot after it cooled, I had a mix of ash and unused pellets. My question is my hot rod recessed? I’ve looked at replacements and I see it sticking out. I have a Pro Series 34.

No, that other image has it way too far out. You’ll get backburn if you stick it out that far because the pellets will build up on top of it back to the auger tube. It should only be 1/4″ into the firepot.
Smoke out of the hopper usually means your grill isn’t level and pellets aren’t properly falling into the firepot. Or something is messing with the airflow.
I have a pro 34 and it looks the same inside my fire pot.
Your pot looks like mine. I had a back burn issue a few times in a row. I had to empty my hopper and then run the tube completely dry and then Reprime like it was new.
Pretty easy to order new and replace firebox when needed.
You have to have your rod sick out enough to come in physical contact with the pellets when the drop down. The hot rod only is hot for a minute or so during startup. You can adjust the depth. There’s a set screw. They sometimes the pool is a bit cold and you get shrinkage. Pull the fire pot off, loosen the set screw and nudge it in a bit further. That is if your hot rod is still working. If not replace it.
