Decided to try kippers after reading that they're "more accessible" for beginners than sardines (and I've started to like sardines just fine). So I picked up this can at Walmart. Tried it on a cracker with a drop of lemon. Firm, flaky meat, definitely drier than sardines I assume on account of it being smoked. Smoke and fish smell on opening the tin, but the flavor was basically all smoke with just a hint of fish. It made me think of pork ribs a little actually, but out of a can with no prep. Would buy again.

Love smoked kippers! My fav brand for these is Bar Harbor. I always have them with Cholula.
Looks so good!
Next time pick any 2 from this list and use as toppings:
– chives
– cream cheese
– everything bagel seasoning
– fresh lemon
– capers
– pickled onion
– hot sauce
Yeah personally I found these to be overpowering with the smokiness.
Love putting these on top of ramen with a soft boiled egg
Just had some kipper for breakfast! I really like long Oscar kippers in olive oil!
I toast a bagel, top with jalapeno cream cheese, then the kippers, then some everything bagel seasoning and red pepper flakes!
I haven’t heard kippers snacks being called more accessible than sardines before, that’s interesting. I tried kippers once, I think they were Brunswick brand. I took one bite and threw the tin away, they were revolting (and I LOVE sardines). Maybe I need to give another try, possibly with another brand? Either way I’m so glad you enjoyed them!
I like those
Imo the tastiest way to eat these is just a squeeze of lemon like you did, then douse it with black pepper. Same goes for any kind of smoked mackerel too, delicious
That’s my favorite brand of kippers. We bust out about 8 different hot sauces and some mustard, put ’em on triscuits and make each one a whole experience. It started out with some Tabasco, which is always a great addition to those, and evolved from there over the past 20 years.
I want you to try mackerel now
I recently got a shipment of 20 from Amazon, has anybody noticed the quality change in the Polar Kippers, they are soft and spongy like a used dish sponge. I struggle to eat them they used to be dry and firm for years. I hope it’s an isolated set back.
These are some of my favorite kippers. You can find beach cliff ones at some dollar trees, though not all of them as I’ve found and I think those are really good too.
Number one staple in my cupboard. Affordable, real smoke, and tasty.
It’s a lot like bacon, it’s good for breakfast with some eggs. I usually warm it a bit (just pop the whole tin into a bowl of hot water for a couple minutes).
I like em in an omelette
They are delicious on hot toast with far too much butter, and maybe a poached egg. Love the Bar Harbor ones too.
