I’ve included pics of the issues I had with the base layer of green fondent. Why is it cracking when I lay it on the cake? I don’t think it’s dry, i literally just rolled it out. It was solid until it got on the cake then stretched and tore.

And how do I stop it bunching up at the bottom so I’m left with these ugly wrinkles?

Butter cream crumb coat: is there any way I can improve this?

For anyone interested, the cake is an orange and poppy seed cake. The whole thing took me around 8 hours and was completed in one day.

I’m not a baking expert so I can’t answer your questions, but I love this!!

I can’t help with your questions either, but I think it’s really cute! I really like your scroll work, and the tree is exquisite.

The only feedback I would give is that the bear is adorable, but it truly isn’t giving Winnie the Pooh. The color is off, as is the structure (Pooh is rounder). I would work on that realism for future cakes.

But it’s a really great job! You should be proud.

Wow! The only things I’d change is to give Winnie a red top and a jar of “hunny” 😀

I think the whole thing is perfection. It somehow translates the illustrations really well!

I can answer your fondant question. It’s often referred to as elephant skin. It usually happens because the fondant is too dry. Use less confectioners sugar and/or cornstarch when rolling it out or working with it. If it gets too dry, roll it back up and knead again, with a bit of shortening added.

The dryness is really contributing to your issue on the sides as well. A less dry, more flexible fondant will be easier to work with and smooth out. Though truly, it just takes an unreasonable amount of practice to perfect your fondant technique, so don’t be discouraged. People often attribute cake decorating to talent. I am of the opinion its largely skill, and skill takes practice. You’re doing great!

This happened to me the first few times I tried to cover a cake with fondant. Maybe there was too much dry ingredient used to keep it from sticking while rolling out. The frosting could be too soft, or maybe it was rolled out too thin. Fondant just takes time and practice. There are several tutorials on YouTube that can help you out.

Is this homemade marshmallow fondant or store bought? (Just curious) I like the taste of homemade better, but I have a harder time covering a whole cake in it.
Btw Beautiful cake, and a lovely shade of green. Well done!

I can’t make fondant work. I’ve been successful with modeling chocolate.

    Adorable cake!

As others have said, the fondant was most likely too dry when covering your cake. You really have to knead it a lot to make sure it’s nice and pliable without using too much cornstarch/powdered sugar

When smoothing your fondant onto the cake you need to pull the bottom outward and smooth downward from the top to avoid wrinkles. It feels kinda weird to do, but once you get about halfway it all starts falling into place.

The best part about a crumb coat is that it doesn’t need to be perfect! Just make sure you chill it for at least 30 minutes or more.

I also do a final buttercream finish before I apply fondant, since I assume people eating the cake will likely peel it off and not eat it. So the final coat is important and needs to be smooth and chilled as well

You did a lovely job of hiding the fondant parts that you didn’t like, while making it still cohesive and cute, and I think that’s an important skill as well!

Just keep practicing, it’s all looking great!

Adding shortening to fondant usually helps it be easier to work with for me.

Old school Winnie the Pooh is the best. This looks amazing.

Happy birthday and that’s a beautiful cake

It’s lovely! I make my fondant from an online recipe for marshmallow fondant. I make sure it’s really pliable and sometimes even warm it up a little if my hands aren’t keeping it warm. It takes so much practice and like you, I just cover any oops marks.

I can only say that you have done a way better job than I could do, and for that you have my kudos! Well done, and I do, in fact, love that shade of green.

You made a cake with Poo on it. No way I’m eating that.
