













I photographed some more pages, putting focus on the central and eastern European ones to stay consistent with the topic. I made sure to include recipes for various dumplings, soups, nut rolls, babka, Easter breads and that old-timey horseradish-beet relish that might be hard to find nowadays. I haven't made many of these myself, but my grandparents and great-aunts used to do.
The "Babushka Power Cookbook" is one of those charity-benefit cookbooks that they used to sell back in the day for various causes. Members of the community would donate their homestyle recipes, a sponsor would donate money to print it up, and they would sell them with profits going to charity. This one from 1976 was sold to benefit local children's hospitals in the Pittsburgh, PA area (in USA).

The Hungarian gulyás recipes looks pretty authentic.
I don’t see any poppyseed filling option for the nut rolls, but maybe the people who wrote these recipes couldn’t get that ingredient. My mother couldn’t get it in our small town in Michigan. Fortunately, the Polish bakery just over the state line sold nut rolls with poppyseed filling.
I would love to have a book like that.

This is amazing – as a born and raised western Pennsylvanian – I saw a lot of familiar things. My mom made the cabbage and noodles version of halushki with cottage cheese, then I kept scrolling and saw the version with cottage cheese. I’m gonna make that and the pigs in a blanket. I also recommend Pittsburgh pierogies if Eastern European soul food is your thing (I found a great recipe in a travel blog years ago – but it looks like [food.com](http://food.com) has a similar one). Big time comfort food – thank you!
