First time big green egg owner. Saw this pop up in a moving sale, came with the stand, apparently new-ish cast iron grate, cover and a pizza stone. I checked all over for any cracks or damage, none found. Looks like it needs a new wood handle. Anything else I should check, replace or update? TIA

You did great! Checking the seals is the most common suggestion. Was it kept covered?

Edit to add: I see some rust, so probably not kept covered. Buy a cover if it doesn’t have one. Look for rust and clean it up/oil/paint as needed on the hinge. Scrub clean and season if the daisy wheel has any rust.

New handle isn’t bad for cost. I replace mine every few years. Did you get the rest of the hardware for the bands? There’s hardware there it looks like you’re missing. Good news that’s like ~$20 to get. Do you have the old daisy wheel for the top or the newer style? Nice job on the pick up!

Do not use Lighter Fluid ever……ever ever….. chimney stack has been working for me for years…lump charcoal….you get what you pay for sometimes….Love My BGE…

  6. I have a 20y larger version. Only covered by a roof over hang. I use mine twice a week. I have replaced the hardware once. Seals twice. You can’t kill these things. Great buy.

Love the Egg. There’s a learning curve but that’s part of the fun. Let us know when you make your first pizza on it. That’s a good test and worth the effort. It’ll be done before you can finish one beer. Happy Egging!

    Great value!

That is a super old model as the small handle would have been wood when it was there. Makes it over 15 years old at least.

    But that doesn’t matter.

A check of the seal may be a good idea. Easy way is to use a playing card and close the lid in different spots. Fun way is to put on 6 or more burgers, close the lid and top and bottom vents for 30 seconds and look for burger smoke coming out of the seal.
