At a time when people are trying to avoid plastics — especially when they’re exposed to extreme heat — the AeroPress Premium offers a mindful construction, made only from borosilicate glass, stainless steel, and silicone. Even the coffee filters, which excellently strain the coffee until it’s free of grounds, are unchlorinated and compostable. And since the materials are sturdy and non-reactive, a quick rinse is plenty to maintain the coffee maker between weekly washes with soap.
As a creature of habit, I lean into rituals like a cool, fluffy pillow, and the AeroPress helps me do that with my coffee routine. To brew the perfect cup, you insert a filter, add a heaping scoop of ground coffee, and pour in hot water from your water kettle. Then, use the stirrer to agitate the grounds, and insert the plunger to create a vacuum, allowing the coffee to steep before you slowly push it down to extract the brew into a mug. The process is balanced: not as hands-off as my fully automatic espresso machine, but much quicker to brew with than my pour-over coffee maker.
Most importantly, the coffee tastes like a rich, full-bodied coffee-bean tea. It extracts the fruitiness of Onyx coffee beans just as well as it does the chocolatey, caramel notes of BLK & Bold. Unlike with a French press, coffee doesn’t sit in the carafe between servings, becoming bitter and unpleasant, and I can simply push the plunger down to discard the grounds and filter together. Although, I wish it had a matching countertop discard can for fewer trips to the trash can.
After only a few days of testing, my partner said the AeroPress Premium Coffee Press is the only coffee maker he needs now. I’ll be keeping my other coffee-making methods around to spice things up here and there, but when I want to get the full essence of my coffee beans, I know where to turn.
