Best Buy! The early harvest of the 2023 vintage set the table for winemaker Mark Hopley to reverse the blend behind Hester Creek’s delightful flagship white, leading for the first time with Gewürztraminer (70%) over Pinot Gris. Scents of honeysuckle, daisies, jasmine and Honey Nut Cheerios lead to a lively palate of kiwi, starfruit and Key lime pie with a wonderful white pepper finish to easily balance the 0.7% residual sugar. It’s true to character and an exemplary white wine that will pair with a caramelized onion and Gruyère tart at the winery’s Terrafina Restaurant. And the list of Platinum Awards and accolades claimed by Hopley and winery director Mark Sheridan — including Great Northwest Wine’s British Columbia Winery of the Year in 2023 — continues to be a fitting tribute to the vision of British Columbia businessman/philanthropist Curt Garland, who in 2004 bought and soon revived historic Hester Creek. Garland died last fall at the age 88, yet he made arrangements for his interests to move forward. Qualifiers: Great Northwest Invitational (gold).
