As it reaches its 100th anniversary, a highly sought-after Boston bakery was named among the best in the nation.
Bova’s Bakery in the North End was included on Yelp’s “all-time list” of the 18 best Italian bakeries in the United States.
“From espresso-soaked tiramisu to buttery biscotti and picture-perfect panettone, this Collection highlights some of the best Italian bakeries across the country — serving up sweet traditions, savory breads, and inventive takes on classic pastries,“ Yelp wrote. ”Whether you’re after a taste of Sicily or a Roman treat, these bakeries deliver a medal-worthy experience for every Italian sweets fan.”
Yelp created the list by identifying businesses in the bakeries category and then ranking those spots based on the total volume and ratings of reviews. All businesses were marked open and had a passing health score as of Dec. 9, 2025.
Bova’s Bakery has been operating for a century. Antonio Bova opened the shop, which was originally named A. Bova & Sons Bakery, at 79 Price St. in 1926, according to Bova’s website. Bova’s later moved to its current home at 134 Salem St. sometime after its founding.
The pastry shop has remained in the Bova family for three generations, Bova’s website states. Over the past century, the Bova family and staff have produced freshly baked goods by hand around the clock.
Among Bova’s offerings are the bakery’s famous cannolis, which MassLive’s Nick O’Malley ranked as the top cannoli in Boston’s North End.
“Bova’s has one of the most affordable cannoli at $5. Although some people may take issue with the fact that they aren’t filled to order,” O’Malley wrote in October 2025. “But I’m a big fan of the cannoli from Bova’s. It’s a simpler, sweeter filling that leans a bit away from the tang of the ricotta.”
Bova’s other must-try delicacies include the tiramisu, biscotti, cream puffs, eclairs, Neapolitans, sfogliatelle, subs, Sicilian pizzas and calzones.
“With a focus on authenticity and variety, this spot is a must-visit for lovers of Italian sweets and classic pastries,” Yelp wrote.
Bova’s is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
