I recently bought my first home espresso machine, a Gaggia color off of Facebook marketplace. I'm definitely on a budget, and don't mind doing some extra repairs instead of paying full price for something. The plastic that holds the portafilter was worn away (I've heard that's a common problem with these), so I replaced the boiler/brew group. Now cue the relentless steam problem…. What have I done?!

To note:

  • This occurs immediately after turning on, WITHOUT brewing or using the steam wand.
  • I've opened the machine and turned it on to make sure the water/steam isn't coming out the boiler due to a faulty repair on my part. Inside looks good, it's only steaming from the bottom of the grouphead.
  • When trying to pull a shot, the shot starts coming out 20 seconds after pressing button, and then comes out in a torrent of underextracted mess.
  • Please ignore the mess of a countertop. Grinds and steam and frustration have created a nice coffee film over the entire pantry.

Hard to diagnose from here, but doing open-heart surgery on your very first espresso machine before anyone even got to say “grind finer” is… ambitious. You might be cooked.

That is terrifying. Certainly some leaky seals.

I guess the machine doesn’t have a solenoid to stop the water flow into the portafilter when it’s idle but rather a spring loaded valve in the group head. They will stop sealing after a while.

At least that was what happened with my gaggia evolution and changing the valve helped seal the grouphead better.

In your case with all that steam I’d also look into the temperature probes as it seems that your boiler is constantly pushing stream temperatures.

There may be a pressure valve stuck in open position, or solenoid valve plunger is stuck/defective

Plug it in on a closet or cupboard where you can fit, and sit comfortably, add some towels in the seams to avoid leakage of temperature, enjoy your homemade sauna.

Please tell me it wasn’t sold “in working condition”

Maybe it’s set to steam and can’t be unset for whatever reason
