Westbrook is known to many for its welcoming and diverse community, and the restaurants and markets in the city reflect it. With these six international food markets, you don’t have to step outside of the country, or even the city, to enjoy flavors from around the world.
The market has two locations, one at 206 Brown St. in Westbrook and the other at 44 Washington Ave. in Portland. According to its Facebook page, the market’s mission is to “bridge cultures and bring the flavors of Africa to every home.”
Explore African cuisine at La Fontaine African Market at 406 Main St. with authentic African dishes and ingredients. The market is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. everyday but Sunday.
Located at 888 Main St. is a Mediterranean market and restaurant with a variety of Turkish dishes and desserts, including its popular Mediterranean bowl, Turkish coffee and baklava. You can dine in, take out, or order food online for delivery.
It also has a second location in Old Orchard Beach that will reopen for the summer, according to the restaurant’s Facebook page.
This market offers Eastern European groceries with food from Poland, Bulgaria, Russia, Ukraine, Bosnia, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, and more. You can find soups, sweet pastries, deli items, imported beverages and frozen meals and other goods at 529 Main Street.
The market is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays.
For African and Caribbean ingredients and dishes, look no further than 529B Main Street. The market sells frozen meals, beans, cassava, fruits and more. It even has beauty and hair products, fabrics and jewelry, according to its Facebook page.
If you’re looking for Middle Eastern cuisine staples like fresh pita, tahini, cheese, spices, halal meats and rice, head to 11 Vallee Square. You will find all the ingredients you need to make Arabic, Mediterranean, and South Asian meals at home.
