I am decidedly not an olive oil purist; I eagerly welcome flavored oils into my kitchen to help elevate some of my favorite recipes. Whether I’m dunking crusty sourdough bread into garlic oil, or sprinkling pasta with a bit of truffle oil, I’m always ready for a new flavor profile to up the ante on ordinary foods. That’s why when Brightland launched a limited-edition Sumo Citrus Olive Oil, I had to grab a bottle to see how it fared amongst my faves.

What Is Brightland Sumo Citrus Olive Oil?
Known for its brief seasonality and sweet punchy flavor, Sumo Citrus is a hybrid of satsumas, navel oranges, and mandarin oranges. With Brightland’s new olive oil, the coveted fruit can be enjoyed all year long. On the nose, opening this bottle is like peeling back the juiciest mandarin orange. Honeyed citrus flavors and the delicate balance of grassy olive oil create an excellent union of candied and earthy notes. I’ve used it in more than a dozen recipes, and I’m still finding ways to get creative with it in the kitchen.

Why I Love Brightland Sumo Citrus Olive Oil
I’ve been a longtime fan of Brightland’s assortment of olive oils, including the robust “Awake” Extra Virgin Olive Oil, which is great for sautéing bases for my favorite soups, and the Lucid Lemon-Flavored Olive Oil to add some zest to my dishes. Currently topping my list of favorites, though, is Sumo Citrus. It’s far more than just a topping on my go-to salad — it’s also the perfect splash in some of my favorite gin cocktails. I have big plans to create a Sumo Citrus olive oil cake with it, and there’s a halibut from my favorite fishmongers at Wild Alaskan Company that I’m planning to pair with this olive oil and some fresh herbs.
As a California girl, I’m particularly happy to support the brands behind this bottle; both Brightland and Sumo Citrus are from the Golden State, and harvest with sustainable farming practices. Each bottle of Brightland includes the specific harvest date and is traceable to the family farms who grew the olives, which means it’s a win-win all around.
