Please remember to share the recipe you used or how you think it turned out. If you are uncomfortable sharing your recipe, please share some tips or help people create their own recipe. Be very very very careful with activated charcoal in foods. Activated charcoal can neutralize DOZENS of classes of medications and be potentially fatal.

Nice! Feel free to post this on r/icecream too

Pointless, and arguably dangerous. That stuff can neutralize tons of medications, including the efficacy of birth control pills. It’s developed for medical use to absorb/neutralize certain substances and can be harmful in itself at large doses. Certainly not a good idea to offer this at a commercial shop.

If folks want black ice cream, at least make black sesame, or use black cocoa!

Black sesame is so much better and not dangerous, they should just make that.

I prefer black sesame ice cream. Arguably it’s a bit more grey than black but it tastes better and doesn’t have antic the dangerous side effects other people have mentioned here

Baskin-Robbins used to sell a delicious Mandarin Chocolate Sherbet that was black, but I don’t think it had any particularly dangerous ingredients.

If it’s just to make it black in colour why not just use food colouring? It’s essentially what the charcoal is for but …. Not dangerous and also tasteless.

When I was a teen some friends and I made Black Licorice ice cream using a hand cranked White Mountain ice cream maker we scored at a thrift store. It was soooo good, super smooth and dense. It turned your teeth blue from the paste coloring we used.

I wish we would have written down what we did.

    Also DOSE matter…
How much Activated Charcoal you get eating one pint of ice cream? it’s enough to be clinically significant? Well… we don’t know and I am pretty sure they either 🤪

There was a fad a few years back about the black ice cream soft serve with the charcoal. I made some for my shop and got told to pull it by the health dept. Can’t use it, even food grade, as its classed as a supplement/medication. I dont know how all these high profile boutique shops got away with it.
