Ive never cooked tri tip off a grill, but about to do it now.
Will do a basic slightly hotter sear for the crust, then finish in oven at a lower temp than I would a strip or ribeye for a few min longer… send feedback if you have other ideas
Not sure how it will go, but I'll figure it out fast, or not… Lol.

I would just do it in a pan. Salt, pepper and red pepper. Three minutes sear per side sear, add some butter and flip every minute until about 124F inside, then remove and rest for bit. Then cook some eggs in more butter and enjoy your breakfast.
Salt each side. Sear 2 min each side on the range. Finish in oven at 425 for 5 -6 minutes for medium rare ( get a thermometer to be accurate). Let rest for a few min before slicingÂ
Fast, yes, 2-3 minute sear on range in largest pan, preferably cast iron.Â
I skip the oven, I’m hungry, and the shit pans I have aren’t oven safe.
Well, the only recipe of trip tip I know involves marinating your steak in Benadryl
You got a thermometer? Reverse sear.
Rub it with either of these:

Then charcoal grilled or pan cooked to medium. Serve with butter and chimichurri sauce. Rice pilaf and grilled vegetables on the side.
Salt it the day before and take it out of the fridge 5 hours before
You can try cold searing it. I did this with some pork shoulder steaks and came out good.
I pan fry these all the time. Sometimes I also finish in the oven. For me it’s cheaper to buy a whole tri tip and have the butcher slice it for me.
