Scrambled eggs? Boring. Poached? Forget it. Fried? Yawn. Young Brits are turning their backs on traditional ways of cooking the humble egg and are reaching for more exotic recipes.
‘Cured egg yolks’, ‘raw eggs over rice’ and Cajun egg boils are now all the rage with young cooks, who like to explore viral egg trend recipes from places as far away as Japan, South America and Korea. Other recipes with new-found popularity include ‘Royalty Omelettes’, ‘Mayak eggs’ and ‘Egg flights’.
And most of these new trends are discovered on social media, with a survey showing that nearly 80% of Gen Z-ers say they come across recipes this way. Two-thirds of those surveyed say their ‘for you’ page on Instagram is full of interesting recipes from around the world.

One of the trends that is dividing the nation is eating raw or runny eggs which 60% of those surveyed by British Lion Eggs have noticed popping up a lot on TikTok.
Almost half have no problem chowing down on raw or runny eggs, as long as they’re safe, with two-thirds believing their parent’s generation was fussier than they are about tucking into runny yolks.
Many go a step further and say they enjoy eating many things that their parents would never dream of trying, like bubble tea, matcha, hot honey, pickles, Korean hot pot and Birria tacos.

A British Lion Eggs spokesperson said: “We know that food is a path to global exploration, with the advent of social media finding and trying new recipes is even easier.
“Something that is clearly evident in this research as modern Brits are increasingly embracing the endless and exciting ways they find eggs served online.
“With the growing appetite for raw and runny egg dishes, we always recommend that shoppers look for the British Lion mark, which not only guarantees the highest food standards, but is also recommended by the NHS to ensure eggs are safe to serve raw or runny, even to pregnant women and young children.”
