A pretty big move. For context there have been concerns about the overfishing of mackerel in the north sea for a number of years (after a successful recovery of the stocks in the 2000s and 2010s) due to the relevant countries not agreeing a shared quota properly. I am usually against the idea that it is on consumers to avoid eating overfished fish as the situation is usually complicated in terms of knowing exactly what stocks and fishing methods are sustainable, and really only government fisheries policies can prevent overfishing. But when you have whole supermarket chains boycotting it then you might see industrial fishers and governments forced into more effective action. I will personally probably pause eating mackerel from now on as the situation is so blatantly unsustainable across the board that I can't do it in good conscience.

Context for non-Brits: Waitrose is the 8th largest supermarket chain in the UK. Generally considered to be a high end / posh one.
Is this just Atlantic mackerel or the other species as well? Some tins are chub mackerel which is a different species.
It says they will be replaced with sustainable alternatives, but it doesn’t mention what. I wonder if it’ll just be sardines or if they’ll have something else like kippers/herring, etc.
*so it begins…*
