Hello my fellow recipe lovers! I’m on a quest to re-create some chocolate chip cookies from a local family restaurant. Little backstory – this recipe is actually from an old NY bakery that was open from 1963-1980. The owner was a WWII veteran. When they closed, they sold their cookie recipe to a local restaurant that is still open and operating today. However, they refuse to give the recipe to anyone lol. Not even past/present employees. The only people who know how to make these chocolate chip cookies are the owners. Since I no longer live in the area, I’ve been trying to figure out how to make them myself. I’m mega craving them.

These aren’t your typical chocolate chip cookies. If anything they’ve always reminded me of a chocolate chip cookie/sugar cookie hybrid. They (used to be) almost white in color, huge, firm yet soft, very crinkle-y, and super sandy like a chips ahoy cookie! I’m talking crumbs all over your hands when you touch them. The chocolate chips are mini (or crushed up?) and were never melted/gooey. These cookies aren’t paper thin or super thick/puffy. Sometimes when my mom bought a sleeve of them, the cookies would be square. I learned that’s from when cookies spread too much and touch each other on the pan.

Around 2017-2019? The color of the cookies changed. First photo is from 2008, second 2014, third and fourth are recent. They aren’t white anymore (like the first and second photo) , but don’t taste super different either. Which leads me to believe that an ingredient in these cookies must have changed formulas. Are they made with Crisco? Bisquick? pudding? Cake mix? Possibilities really are endless. After weeks of research I’ve decided to turn to you guys for help. I saw a few Amish cookie recipes that looked similar but couldn’t find recipes attached. I haven’t seen any recipes that mimic the “sandiness” of these, either. All I’ve gathered is that they’re most likely made with a baking soda and baking powder mix because of their iconic crinkle texture. Any help is appreciated! 🙂
