I’m moving into a new house and they left this grill behind. I am thinking of keeping this and replacing the cooking grate and heat plates but wondering if the peeling parts of the lid are unsafe? I could get a new grill if needed but seems like a waste if this one is okay (with replacements)

Nothing I’d be concerned about. Not sure I’d even replace the grates, but you do you. Maybe clean the exterior and buy a cover for it.

I’m not an expert, but it seems the grates are upside down 🙃

That black stuff peeling is normal creosote from smoke buildup. Just use a ball of foil to scrub it off. That grill looks good imo.

The grate is cast iron but if the porcelain is flaking off, you might need to replace them. Some people like aftermarket stainless steel ones or aluminum “Grillgrates”. But I’ve never tried them.

The flaking stuff on the lid is mostly creosote buildup and can be scrapped off.

The biggest issue is the heat plates called “flavorizer bars” are completely rusted through. That will cause uneven heat distribution and allow cooking liquids and grease to drip onto and into the burner tubes.

That Spirit is a very good grill. I had one 2 burner one before I upgraded to a larger 3 burner Genesis.
