Thanks to Stephen Colbert, we’ve been lucky enough to get the inside scoop on some of our favorite celebrities’ favorite sandwich combos. While participating in “The Colbert Questionert,” a now famous segment from “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” U2 frontman Bono revealed that he loves the U.K.’s Chip Butty, and actress Natalie Portman is partial to a classic peanut butter and jelly.
But after sharing this recipe during a recent appearance on the late show, we think that actor Jeff Daniels may have one of the most unhinged favorite sandwiches yet.
How To Make Jeff Daniels’ Favorite Sandwich
When Stephen Colbert asked the “Dumb & Dumber” actor to name the best sandwich, Daniels responded with a combo that was totally unexpected. Instead of a classic club or hot meatball sub, the actor revealed a personal favorite that’s as confusing as it is intriguing.
Daniels starts with the foundation of the sandwich: pita bread. But his favorite sandwich isn’t a classic Greek gyro or even a stuffed pita pocket—because the next ingredient is a quarter-inch layer of creamy peanut butter spread over the pita. While it may not be the traditional sliced-and-stuffed pita or even a folded sandwich, a smear of peanut butter over bread is a pretty standard combo. But Daniels doesn’t stop there.
Next, the actor adds a unique twist to the PB base: potato chips. But Daniels doesn’t add the typical salty classic-cut chip you may anticipate; instead, he tops the nut butter with a generous handful of crushed Ruffles Cheddar & Sour Cream Potato Chips. Yes, the creamy, cheesy, crunchy bright-orange chips.
Daniels doesn’t stop there, though. Once the pita is covered in peanut butter and Ruffles, the actor adds the finishing touch: a drizzle of “Sweet Baby James” barbecue sauce. (The star then clarified that he meant Sweet Baby Ray’s, which is one of our favorites, too.)
Once folded, the sandwich, which Daniels describes as the ideal combination of his three favorite things, features a mix of flavors and textures for a satisfying bite that’s sweet, smooth, crunchy, savory, and tangy. According to Daniels, “it’s like visiting three countries at once.”
Personally, I’m pretty skeptical about the actor’s favorite sandwich, but, at the same time, I may just have to try it for myself—especially since Julia Roberts’ pick is remarkably similar. Either way, at least we have Portman’s PB&J to fall back on.
