This has been my recent breakfast obsession.
Natto, tamago kake gohan, a simple soup, tea… and sometimes cheese on the side.
Natto is such a normal breakfast food in Japan, but I know many people outside Japan find it challenging.
I’m curious — if you’ve tried natto before, did you end up liking it or hating it?

Love Natto – amazing with rice and egg
Yes
Love it. I do it with kimchi or achar.
Some people like natto, I’d wager it’s not for most people.
Tried to like it, but it’s not for me
I got some Natto from the Japanese store in London and… it wasn’t my thing. A bit burnt bitter taste which I don’t like.
I thought they’d be like marmite but it wasn’t just umami.
I enjoy it! If it was more available to me (via a local grocery) I’d eat it often. Not only do I enjoy the taste, but it’s good fiber and good for your gut biome
I was a natto hater until it was one of the few filling foods I could find during grad school. Now I am a full on natto stan. Try it with quail egg and/or negi. There are also a lot of interesting varieties including vinegar and wakame-infused soy sauce, etc.
I like it, and prefer it with soy sauce and karashi mustard instead of the tare it usually comes with.
Love natto, especially the TNKG (tamago-natto-kake-gohan) combo. My favourite is the one with daikon oroshi
Yes, I like to eat natto over rice and kimchi on the side.
I have started like natto a lot. A bit of mustard and soy sauce with a bowl of rice
When in Japan my breakfast is raw egg, natto, kimchi. And when not in Japan, I always have natto in my freezer!
Personally can’t stand it. Texture, look, and taste are just not for me
I love it. Wish I could eat daily. I grew up eating it though.
Natto is popular enough in the US now, my favorite Natto brand has come out with English-only packaging.
Big fan of cold udon with natto miso, scallions and a dab of wasabi in summer
I like my eggs in the natto, personal preference
I moved from the US to Japan. I can eat natto on a peanut butter sandwich. I can’t stand the strings eating it with rice and a raw egg doesn’t improve the texture to me but I am at a stage of it is fine on a sandwich level and I get a fermented food.
I enjoy natto! Living in the Netherlands. However my stepdad is Japanese so I had exposure to Japanese cuisine from a young age.
I eat natto almost everyday here in New York
Why is your natto not mixed and fluffy!
Looks like I discovered a new pet peeve
It has a snotty texture and a mold like taste, I really didn’t like it at all
I fucking love natto
Natto anytime is brave. Having it for breakfast is savage 😝! I love all Japanese food. Can’t get my taste buds (and nose) to get on board with natto.
Been married to my Japanese husband 47 years. That’s 47 years of trying to like natto, trying it at least once a year to see if my taste has changed,……and after 47 years, it’s still a NO to me.
I like natto with raw egg or okra. Double the slime
Canadian here. Tried it with an open mind… not for me.
I love natto!
But I’m an outlier. I’m not Japanese, so I never grew up with it. I love eating it in Japan (I live in Tokyo), but I don’t eat breakfast. I prefer mine as a post-dinner snack if I’m peckish.
Probably will give it up when I can’t easily buy it.
I love natto!
I don’t mind the taste, but the texture is a nope for me.
What does natto taste like? The stickiness reminds me of eating nopal lol
I would love to try it. Didn’t found till now.
I like the taste but not the texture.
When I started learning Japanese I began incorporating Japanese foods into my routine to help me stay immersed in my studies. Every Saturday I eat natto with my breakfast and liked it right away. My usual is shiozake, natto, rice, tamagoyaki, miso soup and tsukemono. All delicious!
I want to make my own batch of natto at home. It’s the only thing I don’t make from scratch.
New England here. I love natto!
i love natto so much. i can happily eat it on its own or with rice / pasta but my favorite is to put it over silken tofu and then sprinkle with furikake and chili flakes for poor stupid american’s hiyayakko
As an American, it was a little too strong for me. I honestly hated it lol
I love natto, even the freeze dried stuff
My partner and I love natto. Been living in Japan since last year and we have it for breakfast pretty much every day. My friends think it’s gross hahaha
I add salmon flakes – my favorite breakfast
