Was grinding my coffee the other morning and heard a weird noise, figured it was just time to clean it… Followed the instructions and ground out the rest… Found this instead. Now the outer burrs won't come out.

Any advice? I'm getting to the point where I think I might need to replace it 😐

Update: I GOT IT!!! Thanks for all the advice and tips! I had been wrestling with the our burr for an hour and needed the break/advice/support. I'll inspect the burrs but they surprisingly seem fine.

I don’t really understand what I’m looking at. Is that like a chunk of rock or something stuck in between the burrs?

I think you’re gonna have to find a way to dislodge the stone first. Before u can remove the burrs.
There is a good chance the burrs will work fine if u manage to do it.

You can buy spare parts and try to fix it, should still work.

Buy a good grinder. The built in one isn’t really good anyway.

If not: loosen the nut in the middle. Lift the inner bur. Release the rock.

And btw, if the burrs make a weird noise, it’s never they “just need cleaning”.

This is like an episode of Gold Hunters… “if we can’t fix the grinder before winter, this whole claim will be worthless!…”

This seems weird. You should be able to set the burrs to coarsest settings and then twist to align to get the burrs out. With this model you can also remove the cone of the butt itself. I had a brevelle express for years and it would get jammed with coffee but setting it to the coarsest grounds and just removing the burr did it every time.

Dude, don’t put rocks in your coffee grinder, it’s not meant for that!

  8. You should raise it with the roaster. They might be able to compensate you

I highly doubt your grinder is broken. Totally possible but unlikely.

I had the same happen on my BBP. Just grab a screwdriver and pry it out. Probably will take some effort, but pop it out and I almost guarantee that it’s going to be fine. I can’t see a ton of damage in the photo

Mini impact with a socket attached to get the nut off the top. I have similar burrs and mine is reverse threaded so the drill likely needs to be in reverse to remove the nut on top. You’ll be able to pop the center right out

Metal contracts when cold, maybe try putting an ice pack directly on the burrs near the rock for 30 minutes (make sure the ice packs isn’t sweating water onto the burrs), then see if you can dislodge the rock. Not sure if it will make enough of a difference, but worth a try. Good luck.

Hmm, tricky. If you’re lucky, you can dislodge the stone with needle-nose pliers. You might also try a non-marring tool like chopsticks to try and lever the stone out. If it’s really stuck in there, you might need to use something like a Dremel. If you had a Dremel with a diamond tip you could grind on the center of the stone enough until it cracks into pieces. I’d probably avoid using a chisel as you’d probably do more damage to the burrs.

  14. This happened to me a couple years ago. I loosened it to the coarsest setting on the dial and used a pair of pliers to pull it out along the curve of the burr. The top one was a little damaged but the bottom one seemed fine. I was able to order a replacement from the breville website for the top burr and added in a couple new seals for like $40 total and it’s been chugging along ever since.

Edit: also contact the roaster. They may offer to pay for a replacement, or at least be thankful to know their destoner is not working.

If you haven’t already, get in touch with the roaster for the beans that contained this, it not even remotely bean sized, something in their process is utterly broken

Wait…. should be watching out for rocks in my roasted coffee?

Mixing critical minerals for the liquid gold is a novel idea.

Just dig that stone out of there and it’ll be business as usual.

  19. devandroid99

Put it in the freezer upside down, might shrink the burrs enough to give you enough clearance to get it out.

  20. Can you not take the inner burr off? I think the stone will out that way. Leave the outer burr alone

OP, are you finding an excuse to buy the new grinder your eyes were set on for a long time?

  22. BotWoogy

I got a rock in a bag the other day in my brevil. But it survived. I tired it off after 1 seconds

  23. beigechrist

Sorry to see that. Maybe from here on out you’ll just pour the amount you need onto a scale per coffee. That lets you perfect your recipes as well as the bonus of seeing if you’re about to grind a stone.

Update: I removed the nut to the inner burr and it was still stuck, no changes. Took a little break and kept rocking the outer burr, after another 10 minutes it finally gave and I got it out!

Surprisingly the burrs appear to be fine. Thanks everyone for the advice and laughs, I definitely needed it.

  25. You can remove the top nut and separate the burrs. I’ve done it on mine.

Edit: you can actually remove the whole assembly by turning the metal hanger that’s folded in the perimeter.

  26. Not once have I ever found anything in my coffee bag aside from coffee beans. Are you guys buying yours from penguins?

  27. When this happened to me the burr looked fine but just didn’t work anymore. I found a replacement piece, possibly from Breville, and got a few more years out of the machine

  28. We just had the same issue with a stone. If you unscrew the top you should be able to wiggle the stone out.

Unfortunately taking the stone out didn’t fix it for us and we had to send it back to Breville for warranty repair.

This is why I measure my beans into a shallow dish before dumping into the grinder. No *foreign object danger*. I was using a small (4oz) steel mixing bowl, but lately I found that a square sushi bar wasabi/shoyu dish from Crate & Barrel suffices.

  30. Why are so many people in this thread saying it’s happened to them too? How do stones contaminate coffee bean production, am I missing something?

  31. CantAlwaysGetWhatcha

Kinda disappointed no one suggested “grind finer” What have we become?

  32. ObsessedCoffeeFan

I see a perfectly valid excuse to accidently break my grinder for a new one.

  33. HRsupervisor

Surprisingly, when this happened to me I sent it to breville for service and they replace my burr. I don’t remember if I was charged but if I was it was nominal and fast. Just a thought if you continue to have issues. My machine was more than a year old at that point. They also sent my original inner burr back. I have since gotten a df64 and couldn’t be happier. Either way, just some information for anyone in the same situation.

I had a VERY hard set of beans that damaged the plastic gears in mine. It works *sometimes* to grind medium or dark roasted beans but I need to get a new motor assembly with new plastic gears. These things can be a bit fragile. But hey, mine is 5 years old and pours 2-4 shots a day no problem. This is the first issue
