Mr. Robert Earl Keen assists me in cooking the perfect chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and cracked pepper gravy. We made this delicious chicken fried steak with venison, but you could also use beef (e.g., cube steak, round steak). Cooking it alongside my friend Robert, who is the 2026 Texas of the Year, made for an unforgettable cook and a special day!

  1. What a legend! I grew up in South Texas and the Hill Country in the '90's/early 2000's, where REK was played religiously. Especially hanging out at the ranch with friends and family.

  2. REK and his music has influenced my life in more ways than i can put into words. Thank you Robert and Matt!! The best collab of 2026!!!

  3. It doesn't get any better than Robert Earl playing and singing a song with the dog curled up beside him after some chicken fried venison backstrap. That is as good as it gets Marr.

  4. Y’all need to be eating this on the front porch while listening to The Front Porch Song

  5. Amazing. Lyle and REK are my favorites. Add Meat Church Matt? Sounds like a song. ❤❤❤❤

  6. I understand you can cook. But a 1 ince deer backstrap cut isn't to thick to fry..me my mom cand cook 2 inch thick pieces of deer tender loin .and make it tender…

  7. Such a big fan of you but especially REK. Live near Augusta and Duckworth grew up across the river, so he came here a lot. We went everything. Hopefully he gives a song or two while its cooking!

  8. Go to grocery store and look at cans. You can get chili or you can get chili with beans. Not saying beans are wrong but they were added to extend the protien in depression. Chili doesn't have beans but putting them in isn't wrong if you like them, but then it's chili with beans

  9. This guy is a moron I’m sorry Matt I love my elders too but you just lowered your channel. We know nothing about the dish it was lost with his boring babble

  10. Chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes with cream gravy is what I’d have as my last meal if I had a choice. This all looked absolutely delicious. I bet it’s awesome using venison back strap. When I was growing up, my mom always used tenderized chuck steak.

  11. My mom has always used cube steak and I've still yet to have one better than hers. Always delicious and tender enough to cut with a spoon. I bet the venison would be delicious though!

  12. Matt, I love what you did here. It's almost like ol friends at deer camp bs'n and making supper. Maybe in the future you could get some other well known Texicans say Billy Gibbons or Radney Foster, Kevin Fowler or maybe a Dallas cowboy or a real cowboy like Kent Rollins.
This was really entertaining and enjoyable to watch. Also learned a little from the both of you. Going with frying chicken tenders tonight using the same process.

  13. Legend. Leaving Tennessee is one of my favorite songs regardless of artist. So underrated…. Love ya REK

  14. So who is Robert Earl Keen ? Never heard of him – but being that everyone keeps using all three of his names, he must either be a murderer or a country singer ???
Anyone know who he is ?

  15. In the mid-70s, dad brought home a bunch of venison. Mom made the best freaking fried steak I've ever eaten. Still remember it 50 years on.

  16. Brother, best video on the internet. Great recipe with your daughter. Great seasoning and cooking and to finish it off great music from a man the world should get the opportunity to experience. Shoot man, bring on more musical guests. Not just a cooking video but a gosh darn experience. Thank you and yours.

  17. B-double-E-double-R-U-N, Beer Run! Excellent video, excellent recipe, exceptional people, you just can’t go wrong with this!

  18. Ole REK !! I totally caught a glimpse of Matt headed into the stars game last night. And we all know CFS is a required Texas food. Chili, biscuits and gravy, CSF, tacos, bbq… Many more.. now I gotta get a guitar our and play. Gigem — Whoop!

  19. foods that started out being the poor mans choice. I complain all the time how brisket and pork shoulder the fajita meat, etc has gotten so expensive. 20+ years ago when i started cooking bbq you couldnt find brisket at most stores and when you did it was dirt cheap because nobody wanted it. now they are pushing $100 now.

  20. "butterflying" backstrap is the most effective way to achieve desired thickness and tenderness. I am stupified that you did not know this, but I guess you were not "born in Texas"…

  21. The fact that REK prefers beans in chili just made me love him even more. Take that you chili gatekeepers!! 😂
