Are grounds clinging to the basket walls after tamping a fine and normal thing? Prepareed using Breville Bambino Plus’s portafilter and tamper.

Just at a glance it looks like your grind is too course and you either are not tamping down hard enough or you have too much coffee in the basket

Relatively normal, just means your tamper is slightly smaller than the basket. It shouldn’t affect taste if the rest of puck prep is fine.

I just recently upgraded from the stock bambino portafilter and tamper to normcore pf and tamper and ims baskets.

The stock gear definitely left more grounds on the side but the new gear does it too, just less due to a tighter fit between the basket and tamper

Either way i always blow on the grounds over the sink after i tamp so the loose stuff is gone. I figure it’s worth not having those floating around on the top and gunking up the shower screen

Looks pretty normal to me. Shouldn’t influence pull, flavor, or leave an appreciable amount of grounds on the shower screen at all. You can even use a puck screen to minimize the latter, in general. 🤠

I found that getting a tamper that has an extra “0.5”mm size fits perfectly to prevent this if it bothers you. My tamper is 58.5mm for example, even though they also sell 58.3mm ones.

  6. I give my portafilter a small knock on the side with the tamp, and then tamp again when this happens.

Level, tamp, tap the side, tamp again.

What made you question this in the first place? Was there an issue?

Tamper is small. You can run your finger gently on the inside to loosen some of it, and then gently brush it it out. Doesn’t make a difference. Run the group head for a few seconds after the last shot to clear out the screen.

The bambino tamper has a bit rounded edges and is a bit small.

Slightly (0.5 mm or .7 at most, but that’s pushing it) wider tamper will avoid this. They can be found cheap for common sizes.

The number of times I’ve seen baristas at cafes tap the portafilter with the tamp, and then retamp, you wonder if it’s something that’s taught from one barista to another, and down the chain they go. They’re probably not even thinking about it as they’re smashing out 7 drinks a minute.

Luckily it’s just a cosmetic issue. You’re about to blast those little bits of grounds on the side with 9 bars of pressure which is like 130 psi. A pinch of coffee grounds won’t stand a chance — Whatever doesn’t dissolve will be flattened into the puck. Like others have said it could make for a dirtier shower screen, but the shower screen should be a regular part of your cleaning & maintenance anyway.
