MEDIA, Pennsylvania (WPVI) — Dating back to 1995, volunteers in Media, Pennsylvania have been feeding the hungry.
“People who live here care about food insecurity and don’t want people to be without food…the mission is to not only feed our neighbors, but also to do so with integrity and respect and honor,” said Laurie Ann Rookard, Director of Media Food Bank.
Held within “First Church” in Media, they provide food distributions on two occasions per week.
“They have a chance to take choices that they might like from our community choice room. They get to go to the pharmacy, which has all sorts of baby food and diapers and adult care. So we primarily serve residents of Delaware County, although any county that comes, we are able to serve them as well. We serve about 250 families a week,” said Rookard.
On a regular basis, RISE Community Support Services brings their participants to the Food Bank to get involved.
“I think it’s important on many different levels for the young adults in the community to see that they can make a difference. Definitely for the community to see these young adults with disabilities being able to help out in the community, it makes me feel like our world’s becoming a better place,” said Brighid Moran of RISE Community Support Services.
“This place is my happy place and it has just been amazing for me. It’s breathtaking what people will do for other people and I’m always happy when I’m here,” said Ellen Peskin, Community Choice Room Coordinator at Media Food Bank.
