Going through my cookbooks and rediscovered I have the Peanuts Lunch Bag Cook Book from 1974. The recipes predominantly sandwiches and are geared towards kids making them; after each recipe is a Peanuts comic strip. I've shared one of the recipes for Schroeder's Harmonious Ham Sandwiches and variations of.

Let me know if there are any recipes anyone wants and I'll get pictures of it.

I had this book as a kid!

I remember there being a list of helpful hints at the beginning, one of them being something about how several thin slices of meat were preferable over one thick slice.

That became one of my most important criteria for a good lunch meat sandwich. Nice thin slices equally spread across the whole sandwich, no big chunks or blobs of meat.

I had this book! I’m sure I got it either through a Scholastic order or at the book fair.

    #SCHROEDER’S HARMONIOUS HAM SANDWICHES
    Pimiento cream cheese
    Ham, sliced thin

Butter white or wheat bread. Spread both slices liberally with cheese. Place ham between layers of cheese.

    Mayonnaise
    4-5 avocado slices
    Salt and pepper
    Ham, sliced thin

Spread rye bread with mayonnaise. Place avocado on one slice and mash slightly with a fork. Salt and pepper lightly. Add sliced ham. If the sandwich does not have to stand too long, add sliced tomato.

    Lettuce leaf
    1 hard-cooked egg, chopped
    1 teaspoon mustard pickle, chopped
    Mayonnaise to moisten
    Salt and pepper to taste
    Ham, sliced thin

Place lettuce leaf on buttered brown bread. Mix egg, pickle, mayonnaise, salt and pepper. Spread on lettuce. Top with ham. Sliced tongue is a fine substitute for ham.

WHAT’S SICKENING IS THAT THAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF MY DAY!

I had this book as a kid and I seem to remember that it’s where my sister got the idea to mix equal parts of pickle relish and peanut butter as a sandwich filling. I never tried it because it seemed weird and gross but it was probably fine, if you’re a kid. Is that in there, or did she get it from somewhere else, or did I hallucinate it?

I’d love to see the April Fool-Proof Potato Salad and the Good Ol’ Cole slaw and Noisy Celery Salad. Those sounds prettty delicious!

I have this and still like new from the late ’60’s. Twice a year we were given a book catalog where we could order books and they were shipped to the school.

  7. I didnt have this one but I had another Peanuts cookbook, also geared toward kids. I used to make Charlie Brown’s Mother’s oven potatoes. Which were essentially cutting a potato into french fries and dipping each one in butter and putting them on a baking sheet and cooking in the oven. Thought I was soo very clever to being making healthy french fries. But yea that was my first intro into roasting vegetables!
