Suburban Social Club’s fish fry on Saturdays is a must-try in Louisville

The Suburban Social Club fish fry, held on Saturdays, has been a Louisville tradition since 1919.

A new and highly-anticipated Italian restaurant headed for the Highlands has finally set an opening date.

Cipollini, an eatery from the minds of acclaimed Louisville chef and restaurateur Dallas McGarity, Tarek Hamada and A.J Miller, is expected to open March 27, according to a news release.

The modern Italian restaurant at 1606 Bardstown Road has goals of “redefining upscale dining in Louisville’s historic Highlands neighborhood,” the release stated.

McGarity, owner of The Fat Lamb, 2011 Grinstead Drive, and a James Beard semifinalist, is one of Louisville’s most celebrated chefs. He first teamed up with Hamada during their early days at the iconic Volare Italian Ristorante, which was recently named one of USA Today’s 2026 Restaurants of the Year.

McGarity and Hamada, who brings his experience as general manager of Grassa Gramma, both have “deep roots in Italian cuisine, refined Southern sensibility, and a shared belief in the art of hospitality,” the release said.

McGarity’s menu at Cipollini will include house-made pastas, seasonal ingredients sourced from nearby farms, and flavors that blend both Italian tradition and Kentucky’s evolving food culture.

“Cipollini is about simple layers, honest flavor, and the beauty of what happens when something humble is elevated with care,” McGarity said in the release. “We wanted to create something elegant yet familiar — a place where guests can experience the soul of Italian cooking through a modern Southern lens.”

Cipollini’s name comes from the Italian word for “little onions” and reflects the restaurant’s “philosophy of layering flavors and letting ingredients speak for themselves,” the release continued.

The warm and contemporary dining room will have about 48 seats and a curated wine list at the former site of LouVino, which closed in September 2024.

Cipollini will be open 5-10 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday at 1606 Bardstown Road.
