Mallorca’s culinary scene has gained national recognition as two of its establishments were named finalists in the 4th edition of the Premios Restaurantes con Esencia, organised by American Express. The awards, held in Madrid, highlight authenticity and commitment within the Spanish hospitality sector, reinforcing the Balearic Islands’ reputation as an important gastronomic hub.

Among hundreds of entries from across Spain, Vandal Palma and Mama Pizza stood out for their approaches to innovation and sustainability respectively, illustrating new trends in the restaurant industry. These accolades come at a crucial time as Spain’s hospitality sector confronts significant challenges involving environmental impact, creative culinary techniques and economic viability.

Those behind the American Express Restaurantes con Esencia awards have established the event as a benchmark for recognising establishments that lead by example and set standards for the future of Spanish gastronomy.

Recognition for innovation in Palma

Vandal Palma earned first place as a finalist in the Esencia Innovadora category for restaurants with a ticket price above €50. This award acknowledges eateries that reinterpret traditional Spanish cooking with a modern perspective while preserving its core influences.

The restaurant blends Mediterranean culinary heritage with contemporary techniques, appealing to both local diners and international visitors. This approach captured the attention of the festival’s jury, composed of prominent figures from Spain’s national culinary landscape.

The category is notably competitive, requiring establishments to balance exceptional food quality with innovative concepts that respect Spanish cuisine’s roots.

Sustainability as a core principle

On the other hand, Mama Pizza, based in Cala Ratjada, obtained the runner-up position in the Esencia Sostenible category for restaurants with tickets under €50. This recognition rewards businesses that incorporate environmentally responsible practices, especially the use of local products and seasonal ingredients.

The restaurant’s philosophy centres on reducing carbon footprint by sourcing nearby ingredients, supporting local producers and ensuring freshness. Such initiatives also reflect growing consumer demand in Spain for transparency and environmental commitment within the hospitality sector.

Mama Pizza represents a business model combining financial accessibility with ecological responsibility, meeting contemporary expectations in sustainable dining experiences.
