This is my review for dinner at the restaurant at Harbor House Inn on January 2026

Service, etc: Service here is both very friendly and professional and is at the 3* level. The location is basically on top of the cliffs overlooking the ocean and is certainly one of the absolute most beautiful locations out of any restaurant in the US. The dinning room is a bit dimly lit but very tastefully decorated with various ocean related books and abalone shells, and has other nice ocean themed touches. I would recommend coming a bit early for a dinner reservation so you can have a good look of the views before it gets too dark.

The theme here is based on the local California seashore with a lot of seaweed and similar products being incorporated into many of the dishes, including in some of the drinks and desserts. Some of the ingredients literally come from their beach, while others come from their on-location garden or their nearby farm, and the proteins are also sourced as locally as possible.

This is one of the places I would most highly recommend the non-alcoholic pairing. You can order wine anywhere, while here the NA drinks are basically another 7 chef creations following the hyper local/seasonL theme of the restaurant l, which is one of the main reasons why you would go here in the first place. Though full disclosure that I am just not that into wine when it comes to fine dinning restaurants so if you are a wine lover then I guess take that with a grain of salt, but anyways I would still highly recommend anyone to consider the NA pairing here.

The food here seems to be highly influenced by the Japanese style, where theres an intentional simplicity and the goal of each dish is to let the main ingredient shine. So the dishes are usually not overly complicated and there aren’t really any huge flavor bombs. I think its the most similar to single thread, except with a local seashore theme here, where the local high quality beach/sea ingredients add subtle flavors to try to elevate the dish.

I actually do not personally prefer this type of cuisine with more subtle flavors. However I knew this ahead of time, and with that in mind went in with an open mind and went to enjoy this experience for what it is. So although there werent many totally mind blowing dishes/bites for me, I still really enjoyed the experience and thought the total meal was better than the sum of its parts.

So for what it is, I think this is a singular experience that no one else does as well as they do here. So if this sounds like something you would be interested in trying then its one of my top recommendations for you, though I think its just not for everyone.

Also every dish comes with a card explaining all the sourcing and preparation and other info about each dish, and there is definitely a lot of info! This is definitely a big part of the experience, so if you dont care about hyper local ingredients or why each dish is supposedly special, or if you are looking for life changing bold flavors, then this is probably not the restaurant for you.

Welcome bites (pic 2)
Uni – light crispy mushroom tempura went really well with the uni. Delicate but unami flavors, and basically perfect for what it is – 8/10

Leaf thing – very whatever – 4/10

Seaweed infusion – very nice umami flavors – 6.5/10

Salad (pic 1): Fresh, unexpected and interesting flavors and textures in every bite, and stock jellies went really well with everything. Ive had these types of dishes before and i do usually like them, and this one was by far the best. My favorite “salad” dish I’ve ever had. – 10/10

Trout sashimi (pic 3) – The soy sauce infused with trout head was fantastic and my favorite soy sauce ive had. Fish itself and everything else was also quite nice, and this was also a fun dish overall – 8/10

Abalone grilled and with rice (pic 4): Grilled one used a smart technique and was a good in theory but in terms of flavor it was actually pretty standard. The one with rice was actually really great though and one of the best bites of the night. Overall – 7/10

Rockfish cooked in kombu (pic 5): The texture was a bit too hard for me, and though still a pretty tasty dish, the subtle kombu flavors from how it was cooked didn’t quite do enough to elevate it to the next level for me. 6/10

Bread (pic 6): Pretty tasty bread and butter – 6/10

Squash half circle (pic 7): Really great flavors and textures here, and very well made – 8/10

Lamb (pic 8): A bit too hard to chew, and nice but very light flavors. I loved the veggies here though – 6/10

Pallet cleanser (pic 9): Nice for a pallet cleanser and refreshing – 6/10

Passion fruite foam with custard in egg (pic 9): nice textures and not overpowering or too strong flavors even with passionfruit. – 7/10

Main custard dessert (pic 11):
Soft but good flavors and great textures make it an interesting and tasty dish. My favorite dessert of the night. – 7.5

Icecream and cannoli (pic 12): Simple but solid flavors and everything tasted quite good – 6.5

Tea and accompaniments (pic 13):
Tea was great, accompaniments were absolutely way too sweet/intense and kind of terrible in my opinion – 3/10

Your comment and rating on the first dish perfectly answered my question: it looks beautiful but how does it eat? A plate has to do more than look gorgeous.

Thanks. I found the food at Harbor House profoundly underwhelming, especially compared to other recent 2 stars like Commis and even more so Wolf’s Tailor.

But – if anything you are understating how well designed the interior is – this is a stunning space. And yes, the view is jaw dropping. So – not worth it for the food, which is pretty meh, but the space and area help make up for that a bit.

I still dream about that uni on the fried lichen and the abalone liver rice

  4. I think the same, I’ve been to HH for lunch and dinner and enjoyed both meals but it definitely tends to be more subtle in taste. Also found the non-alcoholic pairing to be very very good!

We’ve stayed at Harbor House a handful of times and it was such a great experience but I think I enjoyed the breakfasts and in room dining more than the actual dining room service.

Some dishes were really memorable but others were just good. I really love the Douglas fir tea they serve and ask for it whenever we stay. Service across the whole property is great.

  6. Interesting review thanks. Harbor House Inn looks so gorgeous (location and food, both) so I’ve been wanting to go, but I’ve found I prefer much bolder and more creative flavors than traditionally subtle styles like this. Sounds like it sort of confirms those fears.
