The stretch of Sunset Boulevard that runs through Echo Park is located thousands of miles from France, but an atmospheric eatery with a surplus of French flair has long transported diners to a mid-century version of Paris, one traditionally prepared meal at a time.

It’s Taix French Restaurant, a low-lit eastside staple known for hearty French onion soup, well-crafted libations, and diver’s scallops prepared “Maxim’s Style,” along with a host of dishes that feel as if they might have emerged directly from the heart of a Parisien arrondisement.

The tale of Taix, or at least the Taix that fans have loved since it moved to 1911 Sunset Boulevard over 60 years ago, has been in its last chapters for a few years now, with news of a mixed-use building and new apartments destined to rise where the restaurant now stands.

“In 2019, Holland Partner Group announced it had purchased the building, and documents submitted to the commission show the future plans for the site, where the developer wants to erect a six-story, mixed-used building that would keep portions of the original Taix built into the structure,” Eric Heinz reported for NBC Los Angeles in 2020.

Owner Mike Taix shared some of the reasons behind the potential closure of the current Taix in the article, citing infrastructure issues and other financial necessities.

Fans of rich mousses, decadent desserts, and a classic Escargots de Bourgogne aren’t delaying their Taix visits, however, as March 2026 comes to a close. Taix itself is days away from closing, with its final day slated for March 29, and supporters are queuing up for one final look and one last taste, for now.

“We are endlessly grateful for our loyal guests, our community, and the incredible employees — past and present — who made Taix what it is,” the restaurant stated in a Jan. 24, 2026 social media post.

“This is not goodbye, but à bientôt. We look forward to reopening after our rebuild, with hopes of welcoming you back in 2030. Thank you for being part of our story.” A heart emoji concluded the update.

Something to note for devotees of Los Angeles restaurant history? Taix’s 100th anniversary is coming up in 2027: The eatery first opened in downtown nearly a century ago.
