Catena Zapata, the renowned Argentinian wine producer based in Mendoza, has been named The World’s Most Admired Wine Brand for 2026. The announcement was made today as part of the 16th edition of the annual ranking published by Drinks International. This marks the second consecutive year that Catena Zapata has secured the top spot, further solidifying its reputation as a leader not only in Argentina but across the global wine industry. The winery also retained its title as the Most Admired Wine Brand in South America.
The World’s Most Admired Wine Brands list is determined by an academy of sommeliers, buyers, wholesalers, Masters of Wine, and writers from around the world. Each member of this panel is independent and unaffiliated with any wine brand to ensure impartiality. For 2026, the voting process was expanded to allow each academy member to cast seven votes, creating a broader data set and reflecting a more diverse range of opinions within the industry. Voting took place in February 2026.
Catena Zapata’s continued success is attributed to its pioneering work in high-altitude viticulture and its commitment to research and sustainability. Founded in 1902 by Italian immigrant Nicola Catena, the winery has played a central role in elevating Argentina’s international reputation for fine wine, particularly Malbec. Under the leadership of fourth-generation managing director Laura Catena, Catena Zapata has expanded its scientific approach through the Catena Institute of Wine, collaborating with universities worldwide to study terroir, climate resilience, and sustainable practices.
Recent developments at Catena Zapata include the opening of Angélica Cocina Maestra, the estate’s first restaurant in Mendoza. This move reflects a growing focus on wine tourism and gastronomy, pairing the family’s wines with cuisine inspired by local terroir. The estate’s Adrianna Vineyard in Gualtallary continues to produce some of Argentina’s most acclaimed wines, including single-parcel Malbecs and Chardonnays that have received multiple perfect scores from international critics.
Italy’s Antinori claimed second place on this year’s list and was recognized as Europe’s Most Admired Wine Brand. Antinori moved up two spots from last year, reflecting its ongoing influence on both Italian and global wine culture. The family-owned company traces its roots back to 1385 and is known for combining tradition with innovation. Its introduction of Tignanello in the 1970s helped define the Super Tuscan category and transform perceptions of Italian fine wine. Today, Antinori operates estates across Italy and internationally, maintaining family ownership while expanding its global reach.
Spain’s Familia Torres rounded out the top three and remains one of the most influential family-run wineries in Europe. Founded in 1870 in Catalonia, Torres has been recognized for its leadership in sustainability and climate action, investing heavily in renewable energy and water conservation while recovering ancestral grape varieties.
Other notable performers on this year’s list include Vega Sicilia (Spain), Gaja (Italy), Penfolds (Australia), Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (France), Symington (Portugal), CVNE (Spain), and La Rioja Alta (Spain). Ridge Vineyards from California was named North America’s Most Admired Wine Brand for the 12th time, ranking 34th overall.
The 2026 ranking also saw three new entries: Scala Dei from Spain, Nyetimber from the United Kingdom—the first UK producer ever featured—and Juve & Camps from Spain, which took home the Highest New Entry award. Italy’s Ornellaia was recognized as this year’s Highest Climber after jumping 34 places to reach 16th position.
Europe continues to dominate the list with 36 out of 50 brands hailing from France, Spain, or Italy. France led with 14 wineries represented, closely followed by Spain with 13.
South Africa’s Kanonkop retained its title as Most Admired Wine Brand in Africa & the Middle East at number 17. Australia’s Penfolds held steady as Australasia’s leading brand at number six.
The selection criteria for The World’s Most Admired Wine Brands include quality and consistency of wines, price-to-quality ratio, strength of branding and marketing, heritage, sustainability efforts, and social responsibility. The results are weighted according to each panelist’s rankings to ensure a fair representation of global opinion.
Drinks International editor Shay Waterworth emphasized that being named among The World’s Most Admired Wine Brands is a significant achievement reflecting excellence across all aspects of winemaking and brand management. Publisher Justin Smith added that this year’s list highlights quality, consistency, innovation, and brand strength at an international level.
