What an exciting wine for a special night. I took my wife to The New York Grill in Tokyo for our anniversary. Called ahead for reservations and to inquire about the corking fee, which turned out to be 5,000 yen, $31.00.
Opened the bottle 3.5 hours prior and poured a 1oz taster. She still needed to breath! Very tart, the tannins were very much forward. Now I'm not wine expert so my explanation about this is not going to be in depth mind-blowing talking about ash and all the other bougie stuff. By the time we were seated, it was like night and day simply beautiful and ever changing throughout the night.
Beautiful nose, silky tannins, elegant has depth, long life ahead, will reach its window in like 5-8 yrs time. Happy that I have 2 more bottles for the future.

Happy anniversary!
I’ll say it every time I see it posted – This was my “aha” wine, and I cherish it to this day.
One of the most prominent and consistent tasting notes of St Julien (but especially Leoville) is described as “graphite” – a mineral flavor that makes it interesting.
Almost like the flavor of chewing a pencil – I know, not very appetizing thought, but it describes that flavor well!
