This guy states that putting dried onion flakes or dehydrated onions in with the pellets will add flavor to the cook. To me it seems useless, like adding flavor to charcoal. Let me know you all’s thoughts and experiences.

  1. I closed the tab when he said best pellets are Royal Oak blended charcoal and hickory.

I wouldn’t want that going through the auger. I’d try it in a smoke box though, but tbh I highly doubt it’ll add anything noticeable.

New to smoking here. Having spent a ton on my machine this is a cringe moment for me. I’m not new to cooking and I would thing this sort of flavor is best part of a marinade or a rub.

I do it (but with fresh onion and garlic and other aromatic plants) with open fire and kettle cooking and it works. Never tried in a pellet but I doubt it would work well bc of how efficient they burn. Open fire I toss a handful in every 10 min or so, indirect on a kettle I usually rub stuff over trimmed fat and toss that on the coals every 30 min so I don’t have to open it as often. Rosemary when cooking lamb is also good, but you need to use 1/10 of what you think you need or it is overpowering.

Maybe in something like a wwp smoke box if you run it fully closed valve or in a smoke tube would be worth testing, but yeah not in the auger.

I have considered fat in the wwp box but I don’t want the mess. The lack of fat smoke in pellet grills is the biggest disappointment with them for me.

Burn an onion some time and smell the smoke. You want your food to taste like that?

Personal opinion on this? I think the idea is fascinating, but I’m going to save it until I have a pellet smoker with a fire box like the Camp Chef ones.

I’ve seen the Kingsford “flavored” charcoal in stores. Your question is a very easy one to answer. I’m not going to eat the charcoal or the pellets so they don’t need to taste like anything.

Season your food, not your fuel.
