TOKYO – The Japanese co-authors of the popular manga series “The Drops of God” and an actor who starred in its dramatic adaptation have received a French medal for promoting friendship between Japan and France.
The ceremony was held on Tuesday at the French ambassador’s residence in Tokyo where Yuko Kibayashi and her brother Shin, who used the joint pen name Tadashi Agi for their original manga, as well as actor Tomohisa Yamashita, who plays the lead role in the drama, received the Chevalier of the Order of Agricultural Merit.
French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noel Barrot, who is visiting Japan with President Emmanuel Macron, presented the medals at the ceremony.
The manga received global acclaim, and the sales of the featured wines boomed. The Japanese-French-U.S. drama adaptation won Best Drama Series at the 2024 International Emmy Awards.
“Through the production, I have learned that wine is more than just a beverage. It is also the history of the places where it is made, as well as the culture and dedication of the people who make it,” said Yamashita.
Shin Kibayashi said that he and his sister are “truly honored” to receive their third medal from France, a country they love.
Barrot praised the trio for introducing a broader audience to the world of wine.
