A Review by Laura Lewis BScHons

Prezzo Cardiff offers a relaxed and contemporary take on Italian dining right in the heart of the city. Situated within the busy St David’s shopping centre, it provides a convenient yet inviting escape from the bustle outside, making it a popular choice for everything from casual lunches to evening meals with friends and family.

Stepping inside, the atmosphere is immediately warm and welcoming. The open layout, soft lighting, and modern décor create a space that feels both stylish and comfortable. There’s a gentle hum of conversation and the occasional clatter from the open kitchen, giving the restaurant a lively but not overwhelming energy. It’s the kind of place where you can settle in easily, whether you’re stopping by after a day of shopping or meeting up for a longer, more relaxed meal. Nothing is too much trouble, and the staff are so accommodating it feels like stepping into an Italian household

The menu reflects Prezzo’s focus on classic Italian favourites with a contemporary twist. Diners can expect a wide variety of pizzas, pastas, and grills, alongside lighter options like salads and vegetarian dishes. Popular starters include items such as calamari, garlic bread, and mozzarella sticks—simple dishes done well, designed to be shared and enjoyed at the start of the meal. The menu is vast and has something for everyone to enjoy and (possibly) share.

For the main course, the restaurant offers a broad selection that caters to different tastes. Pasta dishes like rigatoni carbonara and spaghetti with king prawns are staples, combining rich sauces with generous portions. Their pizzas, from classic margherita to pepperoni and more indulgent options, are made using hand-stretched dough and baked to achieve a crisp yet satisfying base. There are also burgers and salads available, ensuring that even those not craving Italian cuisine will find something appealing.

My two daughters had pizza, one pepperoni, the other four cheese, both absolutely loved the choice. With my middle daughter being autistic texture and new experiences can be a challenge for her, nothing was too much trouble for Bash, our waiter who made all three girls laugh and feel at ease. My youngest had a pasta dish with meatballs, she again said it was wonderful, evident by the mess all over her face! a meal well enjoyed.

I had the Tuscan Beef and Mash -Slow-braised featherblade of beef in a rich gravy, served with creamy mashed potatoes and tenderstem broccoli and it was delicious. The beef fell apart and my husband being the carnivore he is, was so jealous. He usually goes for a meat option, but tried a pasta dish this time – he did not regret his choice. His meal of Chicken Spaghetti Carbonara Al Forno described on the menu as spaghetti in a creamy sauce with chicken, pancetta and crispy prosciutto. Finished with a generous layer of melted Mozzarella and Italian cheese, was flavourful and a large portion.

One of the standout aspects of dining here is the emphasis on inclusivity. The menu includes vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options, making it accessible for a wide range of dietary needs, all of which are asked at the table to ensure all needs are met. This flexibility adds to the restaurant’s appeal, especially for groups with varied preferences.

Service at Prezzo Cardiff is often described as friendly and attentive, contributing significantly to the overall experience. Staff tend to strike a good balance between being helpful and giving diners space to enjoy their meals. Reviews highlight a welcoming environment where guests feel looked after, enhancing the relaxed and sociable atmosphere and our visit was no different,

Portion sizes are typically generous, and the food leans toward comforting rather than overly refined. Dishes are designed to be satisfying and flavourful, with a focus on familiar tastes that appeal to a broad audience. This makes Prezzo less about fine dining and more about dependable, enjoyable meals in a pleasant setting.

Desserts provide a sweet finish, with options like cheesecake and profiteroles offering indulgent choices for those looking to round off their meal. Seasonal menus and special offers also appear throughout the year, adding variety and giving returning customers something new to try. We enjoyed between us, as no parent gets to keep all their desert (sigh), cookie dough, sticky toffee pudding, Nutella doughballs, bueno calzone and a children’s doughballs with white chocolate and popping candy (no-one was allowed to try that one other than the 4 year old though). Each desert was lovely, presented well and not too much or too little to be enjoyable.

Overall, Prezzo Cardiff delivers a consistent and enjoyable dining experience. It may not aim for high-end culinary innovation, but it succeeds in offering good-quality Italian-inspired food, a welcoming atmosphere, and reliable service. For many, that combination is exactly what makes it a go-to spot in the city centre—somewhere you can count on for a satisfying meal and a comfortable, sociable environment. We will definetly be returning.
