We have a pair of French wines from Aldi this week. The cute labels bear more than a passing resemblance to the La Vieille Ferme range of wines from Famille Perrin (available from Tesco) and are made from a very similar group of grape varieties too.

The white Le Petit Poulet is made from a blend of 47 per cent ugni blanc, colombard, grenache blanc, vermentino and clairette, and the red from a mix of carignan, grenache, cinsault and syrah. If all this sounds bewildering, don’t worry; this approach is quite common in the region and usually makes for a more complete wine.

This has lightly textured peaches and pears with a crisp dry finish. Drink this on its own, with spring salads or lighter fish dishes.

Supple plums and blackcurrant fruits with light tannins on the finish. I would try this alongside pork chops or maybe a macaroni cheese.
