The best French wine from 1945 was sold at auction for more than 1.2 billion won, setting a new all-time record.

French daily Le Figaro reported on the 2nd (local time) that a bottle of 1945 Romane Conti was sold for $812,500 at an auction organized by Acker Merrall & Condit, an auction house specializing in Grand Cru, in New York, USA, on the 28th of last month. When converted into the current exchange rate, it amounts to about 1.23 billion won.

The previous record for the highest price was also held by Romane Conti from 1945. The wine was sold for $558,000 at the Sotheby’s auction in New York in 2018 and about 630 million won based on the exchange rate at the time.

Romane Conti is considered one of the world’s finest Burgundy wines. Pinot Noir, the raw material for this wine, is only harvested in a vineyard that is only 1.8 hectares in the Cote de Nuits region of France. Only 5,000 to 6,000 bottles of wine are produced here per year.

The Romane Conti red wine at the auction is one of 600 bottles produced in 1945. At that time, the summer was unusually hot and dry, allowing Pinot Noir to ripen slowly, resulting in wine with excellent aging potential. For this reason, Romane Conti from 1945 has been traded at a high price every time it is on the auction market.

The winning bid is well above the median price of a medium-sized apartment in Paris based on the French Notary Association website.

“Wine lovers and collectors are still looking for rare items,” said Angelique De Runksang, head of the online wine auction site Ideal Wine. “This result is a source of pride for the French wine industry.”
