Why do i keep getting buttholes other than full holes in my bagels? What can I do different ?

I make sure to stretch the dough out while forming and eve go back after boiling to stretch the hole.

This is correct aesthetically for real east coast bagels FYI

This is what mine look like? Isn’t that what they’re supposed to look like?

Make the hole bigger? Either way the dough is going to puff up and make it less of a hole.

Use less dough and make the holes bigger for Montreal style bagel holes.

I use balled up scraps of parchment paper to keep the holes open after boiling, then bake with parchment paper in the hole.

These look like true NY/NJ style bagels! These are also how mine turn out intentionally.

Would you want to share your bagel recipe? I’m sorry you’re frustrated, but they look absolutely delicious!

I would choose a butthole bagel over a gaping hole bagel any day. These look amazing.

You don’t show the shaped bagels! Preshaped ✔️boiled ✔️ baked ✔️. But not the one that would give the most useful info!!!

What I do for mine. I can’t stand the sensation of trying to poke a hole with my fingers so I use the handle of a wooden spoon. Get one finger in there. Stretch. Get two fingers in there. Use an index finger from each hand to stretch them in the air. Like making circles in the air with your fingers. Gosh, this is hard to describe. Anyways, once stretched, put to the side and do the others.

Here’s the important part! Come back and stretch a second time. They have had enough time to rest while you’ve been doing the other bagels so now they will let you stretch them further.

Proof for however long your recipe says.

No need to stretch again after boiling. It’s unlikely to do anything at this point anyhow.

I don’t know where you got an idea of what bagels are supposed to look like, but those look just about perfect.

Damn, I’d kill to have bagels like that!

Those look like perfect bagels to me. I would be insanely happy with those results.

Poke method does it every time. Poke method produces a roll with a hole. Say no to Poke method.

They look terrible, I’ll take em off your hands!

That’s actually my preferred bagel especially when making breakfast sandwiches.

These look awesome actually! What recipe and shaping method did you use because seeing these makes me want to try to make bagels now haha.

What recipe did you use for these? They look fantastic! I’ve only tried bagels twice because they haven’t turned out super great either time.

Because this is what a bagel is SUPPOSED to look like! NICEEEE

I want my bagel to have a tight hole so all my cheese and scrambled eggs don’t fall out the center when I make a breakfast sandwich. Or whatever filling with whatever kind of sandwich.

They’re gonna rise so if you want a bigger hole for your final product make the hole even bigger during the shape and boil process. I personally like them like this so the spread is easier to swipe on.
