HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A local Venezuelan food truck that got its start serving up tasty empanadas is celebrating its 6th anniversary with an event on National Empanada Day on April 8.

Guaiqueri Hawaii will showcase its signature dishes at Sacred Hearts Academy this Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Owner Omarlys Fernandez from Guaiqueri Hawaii joined Sunrise to talk about her and her husband’s journey from making empanadas to order from scratch out of their home to expanding to a food truck with new signature dishes.

Their menu features savory and sweet options inspired by Venezuelan origins. Fernandez showed how she makes a Venezuelan patacon — a popular, crispy sandwich originating from Maracaibo, using mashed and twice-fried green plantains as the crunchy bread, served with shredded chicken, avocado, and a mayo-based sauce.

You can find their food truck almost everyday at 1110 University Ave. On Tuesdays, you can find them in Hawaii Kai and on select Saturdays, at pop-up markets around the island.

Guaiqueri Hawaii also helped with flood relief efforts at the end of March, along with Mercado de la Raza, Madres Churros and Galactic Gains fitness coach, which brought donations to the Lahui Foundation.

Fernandez was a contestant on Kitchen Scraps in August 2025.
